Mint Lionel #11620 1968 Uncatalogued Steam Set/OB+

This Auction has been concluded. Results are not Official until certified by the Attorney on the day following the Auction.

This is the #11620 027 Uncatalogued Freight Set that Lionel made circa 1968; the only uncatalogued Set that Lionel made that year. This Set includes the #2029 Diecast Steam Engine, the #243T Tender, the #6476 Yellow Lehigh Valley Hopper, the #6402 General-Type Flat Car with Cable Reels (packed in the hopper), the #6062-50 Black NYC Gondola, the #6130 Work Caboose, eight 027 Curve Track, one 027 Straight Track, a #6149 Remote Control Track and a #1025 Transformer. As we wrote in our Guide to Lionel Post-War Trains, Volume IV. Uncatalogued Sets, "this set is much more interesting than it first appears. The 2029 engine was made in Japan and is identical to the Hagerstown engine included with catalogued set 11600. The tender had "234W" heat stamped on the shall even through it was not a whistle tender, hence the 234T nomenclature." The gondola, with late AAR trucks and its 2 canister load packed in the caboose, is the same as what was catalogued as 6062-50 in 1969. And there's still more: the hopper was unnumbered, yet given a 6476 designation because it had two operating couplers (but this set has one that only has one operating coupler), and the common-as-lint gray General-type flatcar also has only one operating couplers with late AAR trucks, which indicates that it was 1968-1969 production. Our Opinion is that the Set is generally in Mint Condition, minor signs of age and various very minor nicks and rubs that are usual in the late Lionel Poor Quality Control era. The Original Set Box is in (9-) Condition and include all Inserts and paperwork. All Original in our Opinion. Please add $45.00 for US-48 Shipping and Insurance.
