Very Scarce Lionel #726/2426W Berkshire & Whistle Tender with Gold Pennsylvania Lettering
This Item has been sold. This sale has been certified as Final by the Attorney.
From the same source as the Decaled-Pennsylvania Madison-type Heavyweight Passenger Cars that we have in Lot 750, these are examples of the #726 Diecast Berkshire Steam Engine and the #2426W Whistle Tender that Lionel made circa 1947. The Berkshire is a 1947 Model while the Tender has a 1946-type coil-coupler. There are several usual elements of this Lot. The Engine has Gold "726" Decal Numerals underneath the cab with no signs that it had ever been previously stamped. The Cab's Window Struts are also missing, and the cab appears to have been painted only after the remains of the struts had been filed-down at the factory. We believe this cab was an original quality control reject and went to the Lionel Sample Department to use as a mockup. The Tender has Gold "Pennsylvania" Lettering, similar to that of Lot 750 but a different size font due to the smaller length of the Tender. The previously stamped lettering underneath the Decals was painted-over. While it is possible that these may have come from Madison Hardware, given our subsequent belief that the Pennsylvania Madison Cars are highly likely to be Lionel, we believe these are Lionel samples. However, we have no proof of this belief other than our examination and our knowledge of how Lionel operated in the later 1940s. Our Opinion is that they are generally in Excellent Condition, average signs of use and age. No Boxes. All Original in our Opinion as stated herein. Please add $25.00 for US-48 Shipping and Insurance.
