Rare Lionel #2625/2627/2628 PENNSYLVANIA Heavyweight Passenger Cars
This Item has been sold. This sale has been certified as Final by the Attorney.
These are the #2625 Irvington, #2627 Madison and #2628 Manhattan Heavyweight Passenger Cars that Lionel made around 1950/51. This is the very rare variation with gold Pennsylvania Lettering. As we noted in our Guide to Lionel Trains, Volume V, Rare and Unusual, these samples were "decorated with yellow decals over heat-stamped markings and included the Pennsylvania road name, this scheme was never put into production. . . At the present time, we are aware of three sets of these passenger cars; they were originally sold over-the-counter in Madison Hardware in the very early 1950s. We believe these items were legitimately produced at the Lionel factory." Since we wrote the book, we have been made aware of several more sets that were sold out of Madison Hardware, and have sold several cars over the past three years. This is only the second complete set of three cars that we have known to be for sale for some time. Although some collectors have thought that these cars might have been decaled at Madison in the 1950s, our friend Harry Lovelock, who spent years researching this matter, firmly believed they came from the Lionel Factory. Given our past examination of the #2625 Irvington Observation Car that we sold a couple of years ago, we are even more convinced that these Cars are more Lionel than Madison Hardware. Our Opinion is that they are generally in Excellent Condition. No Boxes. All Original in our Opinion as stated herein (and except for some rollers and screws that have been replaced throughout the years). Please add $40.00 for US-48 Shipping and Insurance. |
