Lionel Employee Sample: #576427 Yellow Girl's Train N5C Caboose

This Item has been sold. This sale has been certified as Final by the Attorney.

This is the #576427 Pennsylvania N5C Caboose that we Lionel made circa 1956/57 as a mock-up. We believe this is one of the color samples that Lionel made-up at various times to add variety to their product line. In this particular example, a possible early Color Choice for the proposed Girl's Set in 1957. This example is one of the items that a Serious Collector must give considerable thought before purchasing. As we noted in our our Greenberg Guide to Lionel Post-War, Volume V, Rare and Unusual Items, page 123, most of these Pastel Cabooses are "as phony as a three-dollar bill." However that does not mean that there are not original ones out there and we have seen this Yellow Color on other pre-production mock-ups. The phony Cabooses we included in our book were especially easy to ascertain because of their heavy, deep and uneven Heat Stamped Lettering. The example in this lot has a Heat Stamping that is much closer to the type actually used by Lionel. It took us five seconds in the past to spot and denounce fake examples of this car that we have seen in other Collections and Auctions. We have spent two hours with this example and can not denounce it. While we are troubled by the closed "A"s in the heat stamping, we believe this could occur because the recently modified heat-stamped tool was too hot and this item was experimental at the time of decoration. However the paint under black light appeared exactly as original samples of various Porthole Cabooses we took from our Collections. Our Opinion is that it is generally in Like New Condition, very minor signs of use and handling. The end pieces have been glued on the inside and there are some glue marks on the inside from excess glue. No Box. All Original in our Opinion, as stated herein. A Purchaser has full return policy for seven days after receipt. Please add $20.00 for US-48 Shipping and Insurance.
